Birthday ideas

Pink Pepper Jun 5, 2007 08:04 AM

I'm new here. Live in Monmouth county. Planning a dinner party for my 50th. Maybe 10 people. Was thinking of Fromagerie. They plan to seat us upstairs. I never like eating upstairs in a restaurant. Thought I'd come here and ask around.
Any ideas for a special, fun restaurant? Thanks.

Here are just a few ides that popped in my head:

    Le Fandy Fair Haven, BYOB

    Shipwreck Grill Brielle

    Piccola Italia Ocean Township

I would say Nicholas in Middletown, but you said "fun" and that place always makes me feel like I am at a Sunday mass and must be on my best behavior. The food is very well prepared, just lacks the "fun factor".

If I think of more, I will post! Happy Birthday!!! :)

Thanks Angelina...I think I'd like to try Nicholas when it's just one other couple. Probably too pricey for a large group. I do plan to go there soon.

I second the recommendation for Le Fandy. The food is really nice, and you'd save money because it's BYOB.

You might want to look at Drew's Bayshore Bistro. It's a bit small, but they could easily fit 10 people. The food is so good and vibrant. Also BYOB. Keyport is a fun little town.

I haven't been to Fromagerie for years. You may want to search this board for discussion. There have been several recent discussions of Fromagerie. Not all positive comments...

I've never heard of Le Fandy. Sounds like a great place to try. Thanks, Val Ann. I'm always looking for new restaurants.

I was at the Fromagerie in Feb. Was very pleased. That's why I thought it was a good idea for my birthday. The fact that they're putting us upstairs is bothering me.
Came to this board, starting reading the negative reviews. Now there are 2 reasons to maybe make a change of plans.
We eat in Brioso's almost every week It's our neighborhood place. We love the food there. The service is lacking. It's definitely not a special occasion place.
Sam Vera's has great service...food is average.
I need a place that offers both. Great service and food.

          Happy Birthday!

edited to add: Indigo offers a six course gourmet tasting for up to 16 people.

Pink - While I agree with the recommendations of Indigo Moon, Drew's, Shipwreck and Piccola, I feel obliged to provide a counter-opinion for Le Fandy. I may be in the minority but I believe the space is too small, the service is both insufficent and unprofessional and the food is nothing to write home about. As far as Nicholas is concerned, I think you can have fun there. They have a nice room behind the bar that they set up for large parties - far enough away from the main dining room that you can feel comfortable "letting your hair down." Which ever place you choose I'm sure you will have a great birthday. Enjoy and Good Luck.

Indigo Moon...I think I may give this a test run. Sounds perfect for my little party. Thanks, HillJ

Someone my husband knows recommended, Table, in Little Silver. Has anyone else been there?

PinkP, if you enjoy wine, great bread and well prepared steaks Table might be a nice choice for your birthday. My dh loves their preparation of coffee steak.

You might consider going for lunch and test it out! I've had lunch with friends twice now (once to celebrate a birthday) and both times we left very pleased with our experience.

Going to try Table tonight. Called Indigo Moon and they said they were closed and taking a break until next Friday.

Pink - Enjoy the Birthday dinner. I'm interested on your thoughts of Table since there have been few reviews. Please report back.

I will, Bgut. Tonight is not the birthday party dinner. Tonight is the trial. Birthday dinner is at the end of the month. Have Fromagerie booked, but will change if something better comes along.

We just got back from Table. We loved it! Went with another couple.Everyone was happy with their choices. They even had pretty wine glasses. I had the spinach salad with the goat cheese. It was perfect. Went with something different and had the Thai coconut shrimp. Just delicious!
                          Will definitely go back again!

Pink - I'm happy to hear you liked Table. Admittedly, I've shied away from the place due to its pricing and cheesy web page. Now that more than a few people have commented favorably about the place, I will definitely try it. It can't be any worse than my dinner last night at Brandl. Again, please have a happy 50th.

Thanks for reporting back, Pink Pepper! Like bgut1, I've been hesitating about putting Table on my "go to" list until I heard more favorable comments. You've persuaded me. :-)
