$1 Crabs
Can anyone recommend $1 crab places in Baltimore? I'm familiar w/ all the usual haunts - Costas Inn, Bill's Terrace, LP Steamers etc...but thought this would be a quicker and easier post than calling around town.

Since this thread has be resurrected, and I have no desire to start a $2 crab thread, I would like to report that I recently returned from Knotty Pine Inn in Highlandtown, a great place in the tradition of Baltimore corner bars, and cracked me some excellent and very heavy $2 crabs, their Sunday special.
Be forewarned though: The crabs are not steamed to order, and are reheated.
Also, Knotty Pine makes a kickin' shrimp salad, and while not the same great deal of the crabs, is definitely worth checking out if offered as a special.

Just in case anyone was wondering, I want in the begining of August got there no later then 7 and they still had dollar crabs til we were leaving at about 8. I've tried another place but they had all you can eat crabs and Islander was better. The crabs were much better in size. If you're a beer drinker I believe drafts were something like a dollar !

Actually, I know two places--which I've been frequenting frequently, both on Hart-Miller Island, and across the street from one another.
The one I've been going to is called The Islander Inn, and they have $1 crabs Tue & Thur.
Across the street, there is Dock of the Bay, with $1 crabs on Monday, I think.
I think The Islander's crabs are way better than those at DofB, but both places pre-steam their crabs. The Islander is an experience, that's all I can say, so be prepared.
You need to get to Islander fairly early to get the $1 crabs. The last two times I've been there, around 8pm, I had to pony up for the $3/doz ones!

Thanks for that. I know I've heard that $1 crabs might be hard to find and once found not worth it, but in my experience, it's $1 crabs; i'm not deluding myself w/ the anticipation of $60 crabs!
Where's Hart-Miller Island? And do both these specials run on thier respective days 4pm - run out?-
re: aussiewonder
Just south of Edgemere, before Fort Howard, I believe it's called Swanspoint.
Haven't had crabs at the Islander but I've been in there for a few beers and have seen the $1 crab sign! The Islander is a true locals place, love it!
The Fisherman's Inn on Satyr Hill Road used to have $1 crabs.-

I think it's 5pm until out. And, Thursday night they additionally have a fried chicken special. I've yet to try it--am always there too late....

As I said, I haven't had it there, but just KNOW it will be good! And, I think it's about $3.99.
I also forgot to mention that they have fantastic french fries, and pretty good, creamy coleslaw.
I think I'm definitely talking myself into going there (again) tomorrow night!
(If you get there too, make sure to introduce yourself to the couple that looks a bit out of place!) ;-)-

re: aussiewonder
Was there last night...and want to provide an update on the timing. Got there about 6 ish (the earliest ever for us) and they had $1 crabs but had already sold out of fried chicken. (Also, a first for us, the parking lot and restaurant was packed, so Mr Baltoellen blamed me for 'spilling the beans' here on CH!--as if!)
Anyway, turns out fried chicken starts at 3pm, & $1 crabs at 5! So, 6ish was getting late for $1 crabs, but far too late for $3.99 chicken platter. I think we were among the last ordering the $1 crab special.
As we were leaving, maybe around 8ish, the table next to us had fantastic looking large crabs. They were the $2 ones! You can't order them, but can only wait until they run out of the $1 ones.... And, unlike the $1 crabs, you can bring the $2 and $3 crabs home! We actually thought of ordering dozen, and just taking them to go....
Anyway, the crabs were small, but heavy and very flavorful (as always)! They also have an app called 'soft shell bites' which are soft shells cut up, fried, and served over their fantastic fries. Highly recommended.
On way home, we stopped by our server's recommended snowball stand next to the Food Lion. A perfect end. They close at around 9pm.
So, as with most things in life, timing for $1 crabs is everything!

re: Hue
I thought so too, but last night @ Admiral's Cup they were rolling out the $1 crabs and it got me thinking...yes! they're not the biggest and heaviest of the lot, but still, the couple of people i asked said they weren't bad. I remember Captain James used to have a $20 two hour all you could eat special but not sure now....
