Santa Monica late breakfast/lunch?

Will Owen Jun 4, 2007 09:52 PM

I've got a screening appointment at St. John's in Santa Monica Thursday morning at 10. I will have fasted since midnight, so I'll be in the mood to eat ANYTHING, but not in the mood to drive all over the place looking for it (having driven all the way from Pasadena already). Does anyone know of a place close to 20th and SM into which I can hurl myself and get fed adequately? The gratitude of an old 'Hound is yours if you have an answer.

I'd head up to Wilshire. Near Wilshire and 23rd there's Bread and Porridge. Or if you want to treat yourself you could go to Pacific Dining Car on Wilshire and 26th. For healthier options, there's a Mrs. Winston's in the Water Garden or a Whole Foods at 23rd and Wilshire.

Really close are Nook, Coogie's Cafe, or Maya (for Japanese).

Jack'n'Jill's is down at 5th st.

Violet is close over on Pico.

There's a Lazy Daisy Cafe both on Pico or up on Wilshire. Also up at Wilshire and Bundy is Literati. On Wilshire as well in addition to Bread and Porridge is Snug Harbor.

For a burger, you've got Father's Office on Montana or The Counter over on Ocean Park.

      Gilbert's El Indio on Pico b/t 25th and 26th.

Head up 26th to Reddi-Chick and then to City Bakery.

JINKYS on 2nd Street between Broadway and Santa Monica Blvd. has WONDERFUL and huge comfort food breakfasts served until 3. Good luck with your test!!

i second the rec for jinky's...yummy, reasonably priced huge menu [and gargantuan portions] that will probably satisfy whatever you're craving whether it's breakfast or lunch by the time you get there. i know 'bread & porridge' and 'jack n jill's' offer similarly diverse menus, but i've never eaten at either one so i can't vouch for the food.

Around the corner, Buon Giorno, at 14th and Santa Monica Blvd. Fantastic breakfasts, super fantastic lunch. It's my favorite best kept secret that's no longer a secret.

Other idea: Marmiton on Montana at 14th. Also great.

amandine on wilshire & 26th (ish) is a patisserie that serves great breakfast items...omelettes & french toast are out of this world!

This is too late for Will, but I just read in the LA Times that Rustic Canyon is now open for lunch. I haven't loved the food (and hated the noise) the times I've been, but I'm hopeful!

Had the same thought MollyO! Too loud at night, would be perfect for lunch...

We must be at the same places at the same times, methinks.

So funny. Yep, I would say based on our posts there's just no way that we haven't crossed paths at some point! Actually, whenever you recommend a place that I haven't been yet I make a note that I should try it because it probably means that I'll like it too. Keep up the posting!

Awesome! Thank you so much for the recommendation. Playa really needs a place like that. I'll be in that neighborhood on Saturday and will have to stop by and check it out.
