Suggestions for Philly before we leave the US?

flinty Jun 4, 2007 12:50 PM

My husband and I will be in Philly for the first time next weekend, attending a conference at the Hampton Inn Philadelphia Convention Center on Race Street. Immediately after the conference, we fly to Tanzania to begin our service with the Peace Corps! I am looking for suggestions for restaurants that are within reasonable walking distance from our hotel, cheap-ish and vegetarian friendly; we like most genres of food, especially hippie-vegetarian, Indian, Middle Eastern and Thai. Any ideas for our last few meals in the US?? Thank you!

Horizons is great but definitely not cheap-ish. If you could splurge I recommend it 110%

The following are more cheap-ish and good

New Harmony vegetarian Chinese on 9th near Race, very good.
Mama's Vegetarian (casual/take out felafel) 20th near Chestnut (a bit of a walk, but best felafel in philly)
New Samosa Vegetarian Indian buffet, 1214 Walnut. (some don't like it, but I do).

Oops, I missed the part about cheap-ish. Horizons definitely isn't that.

If you feel like staying in one night at the hotel, Tiffin is in my opinion the best Indian in Philly and they deliver to much of the city, including where you'll be.

There are many good Thai and other Asian options near the convention center, Rangoon is pretty inexpensive and delicious, I believe it's the only Burmese restaurant in the city.

Got the perfect places for you.
Charles Plaza Restaurant at 234 N. 10th Street at Vine. (my first choice)
        Next door is Tang Yean.
Both are vegetarian oriented but with other stuff as well and fit the bill perfectly.

It's not near your hotel, but if you are vegetarians, you should definitely go to Horizons.
