You can taste mate cocido at Maison Camélia Simesis on Emery St, in front of the cinema Quartier Latin.
For the true experience, the way they serve and drink it in Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil, you'll have to buy a thermos, and 2 littles things that are necessary in order to drink it. You also need the yerba mate. To find the yerba mate, I go to Libreria Espanola on St-Laurent. They sell also the useful things to drink mate.

Are there any other sources of yerba mate in Montreal? I'd like to prepare it at home if possible.

They have it at all the Latino groceries even some supermarkets. Mostly Cruz de Malta brand. The paraphernalia is harder to find , but I'm pretty sure they have some at Librairie Espanola.

Has anyone found the "special straws" and mugs? I am regretting not having bought some while in Argentina...

This thread was started a long time ago but I just came across it...There is restaurant/store on somerled called "Che Churro". They sell and serve mate and other Argentinean fare (empanadas, churros, alfajores)...http://www.chechurro.com/
I think they sell the gords and the bombillas. The yerba you can find at pretty much any latin grocery store...Good luck!
