Best Restaurants in Portland

Any opinions on the best in Portland? Thanks.

I rarely see it mentioned here, but the best dinners I've ever had here have been at the Back Bay Grille. (I still remember a tuna tartare appetizer I had about six years ago.) I haven't been to Fore St in years, so I won't weigh in on that.

I am from Portland and now live elsewhere (If I didn't cook we would starve to death, as the restaurants are SOOOO lousy here!!) We will be in Maine and New Hampshire in July for a few days and will be eating our way through !! Fore Street is a must. Make a reservation ahead of time!! For a lobster J's Oyster Bar is it. Duck Fat for fries. Hugo's is really good too. I haven't been back for a couple of years so I am sure I have missed alot (in more ways than one :) !) But Fore Street ranks high on my list as favorite places and I have eaten from one end of the country to the other as well as several European countries.

Can you give me an idea of menu items and prices, their website does not have a menu because it says that items change daily?

Dinner for two with cocktails, wine, appetizers, entrees, salad, dessert and coffee will run you between $200-$300. The wood grilled mussels are amazing, and they elevate salad to an art form. Some on this board have an issue with the "attitude", but our server was helpful, friendly and professional.

Can't judge "tude" by only one waiter !!!!!!

That is so true irwin and, obviously, that cuts both way. I've had totally professional service at Fore Street many times. But several times the "tude" has been more than readily apparent.
