Restaurants on a road trip from St. Louis to Omaha

I will be traveling by car from St. Louis to Omaha next week. On the way, I will be passing through, or near by; Columbia MO, Liberty MO, Leavenworth MO, St. Joseph MO, Falls City MO, Nebraska City, Bellevue, and of course Kansas City on routes 70 and 29. Can anyone recommend some really neat hole-in-the-wall or great family owned restaurants or smoke houses for a well deserved driving detour. I have plenty of time to waste on my drive back...

  1. You might want to try Arthur Bryant's BBQ as you pass through KC. It fits into the hole-in-the-wall category. It is very well known and respected restaurant.

I 100% support this suggestion. Get the burnt ends. Best bbq you'll ever have.

We stopped there on a roadtrip last weekend. Here's my plate of burnt ends, sliced pork and fries. Perfection.

Nice picture. For my money, the burnt ends at AB are too "wet". However, the brisket sandwich (sauce it yourself) is killer.

    2. On that route, stop in at Booches, on S 9th st in Columbia. Providence Rd exit, take a left to Broadway, right on 9th, 1 block then it's just beyond St. Louis Bread Co and right before Billiards. A couple of burgers and/or chili or soup (if it's a Friday) will still leave plenty of room for burnt ends by the time you're in KC. Not open on Sunday, btw.
