Avatar ID missing in "My Chow"

LindaWhit May 31, 2007 10:16 AM

Not sure if it's just me, but I just noticed that if I put my cursor over an avatar in My Chow, it doesn't give me the name of the person who is either reading me or who I'm reading. I'm forced to click an avatar to see who it belongs to.

However, this same issue does not happen when I do put my cursor over any avatar in the "Who's Talking" box in a regular post.

I'm **pretty sure** the avatar ID used to work in "My Chow". If it didn't, seems completely useless to me.

But then again, I personally think the avatars are a waste without having a name under it in "Who's Talking" so we DON'T have to scroll over it to see who is writing something in a Gazillion+ post thread. But I've already railed against them when they were first introduced, and fat lot of good that did. :-)

Anyway - is the Missing Avatar ID in My Chow a technical glitch?

It's not just you. I just noticed the same thing. It's impossible to identify the avatars on the "My Chow" with the scroll-over as it used to work up to this afternoon. And the name, but not the enlarged avatar, show up when I scroll over the "Who's Talking?" avatars. I hope it's a glitch, as it makes the site (and many people's detailed avatars) much less useful.

Same here. Hovering over an avatar used to pop up the username, now it doesn't. That feature has been borderline useless since names were removed, now it's a complete waste of space.

Completely agree with this statement, but that fight was fought and those of us against even having avatars lost that battle. Unfortunately, as it's really useless without the name list in Who's Talking.

I'm pretty sure that's a glitch. I'll add it to the buglist for Engineering.

Should be fixed now. Thanks for the heads up!

Along the same lines, it used to be when you moused over (not proper terminology, I know) a person's avatar in a post, it would bring up a larger thumbnail picture of their avatar. This no longer happens. Not that it's a big deal, but the avatars are so small, that half the time I can't tell what they are unless I see them in larger form. Now that there's no way to do this, I can't tell a darn thing about someone's avatar. Kind of makes the point of having them useless, doesn't it?
Also, the name now comes up on "who is reading me", but only the name, and not the enlarged avatar as before.

Yeah, that's the other half of what changed. The larger avatar does show up on that 'hound's profile if you click on the little one, but it was a lot more convenient when the larger image popped up on mouse-over. What was fixed this morning does make the important thing--the name--available, though. I agree with picking that as the higher priority.

Looks like another bug needs to have a little Raid sprayed on it. I posted on this aspect of the glitch (avatar not enlarging when cursor rolled over it) before I knew that you had already covered the issue. Englargement not working for me with either Firefox or IE 7.0.

There are some technical problems with the avatar enlargement feature, so Engineering has removed it. Whether they will find a fix for the issues and the feature will return or be replaced with a new version that's both technical and user friendly is still to be decided.

I submit my vote for returning the feature. I'm finding it tiresome and irritating to have to click into someone's profile so see the avatar. People have put effort and creativity into their avatars. It's a shame that they're less likely to be viewed.

To fershore and QueenB - are you saying it doesn't work when rolling over the avatar in the Who's Talking block of avatars AND over the avatar next to poster's names in threads? Mine works in Who's Talking, but still doesn't work on the avatar next to posters' names.

For me it works on the who's talking (although I can't see it because for some reason, on short threads like this, the picture drops down and is blocked by the advertisement. It doesn't work next to poster's names in threads.

Same with me - one line in Who's Talking, the ad blocks whoever the avatar belongs to. Otherwise, it seems to be OK in Who's Talking. And within threads hasn't worked for me since my original post.

Yeah, it's working again in Who's Talking and in the Who's Reading Me and Who I'm Reading in profiles, but not on the little avatar next to the name at the bottom of posts. It hadn't occurred to me to check that earlier.

I find that suppressing the advertisement (in the browser options of a Firefox-based browser) allows me to see the pop-up OK. If I hear that the ad stops blocking content, maybe I'll turn the ads back on.

Like the others, it works in Who's Talking but is hidden by the ad and doesn't work next to posters' names.
