Oakland. Downtown.

Pick up some chow and a delicious mixed drink at Lukas (see many positive
reviews hereabouts). Then up to the Stork Club. Back west to Van Kleefs.
Down to Radio on 13th, then out to the Ruby Room on 14th. From there,
it's time for some more chow, so stumble through Chinatown (again, see
many many chowhound postings directing you to the best in late night grazing), and
finally cross under the freeway to end your night at Merchants, where you belly
up to the legendary combination bar/urinal.

Unlike North Beach, frozen in the amber of 1957, and the Mission, declared
"2nd coolest place on earth" by Esquire mag ten years ago (forever after
condemning it to uncoolness), Oakland is quite alive.
