Vegetable Kibbe at Reef Cafe & New Stuff at Yi Soon
Had this as a sandwich at Reef for lunch and it blew me away. They told me it had squash, grains, and nuts.
It was very complex and yummy. Chunks of cashew I think in there. The sandwhich also had big chunks of the pink pickled turnip in it.
It was really just darned excellent.
Also, Yi Soon also seems to have huge excellent looking creampuffs and quite a few other new items. I need to explore again.
I tried one new thing (not the cream puff) and it was like a cross between a brioche and a croissant (VERY buttery) with some vanilla cream inside. The pastery reminded my a bit of the red bean, cream puff at Japonaise.
hey striperguy . . . i totally agree with the vegetarian kibby sandwich. i just love the texture and flavor. it's what always wins me over. well, that and the beef/lamb schwarma. as a sandwich (though i haven't ordered it any other way) it's really neat and easy to eat . . . and so easy on the wallet.
Based on this suggestion I just tried the Reef Cafe and the Vegetarian Kibbe (Kibby?) sandwich last night. Amazing! The fattouch salad was also excellent, and my friend's lamb kabob plate featured perfectly charred grilled lamb on a bed of rice, with various grilled vegetables and a little more fattouch salad. By 10:30 PM they were out of Baklava, but we had an excellent rice pudding instead for dessert. They even have a halloumi cheese sandwich, which I will have to try. Also, the man at the counter couldn't have been any nicer. I think we have finally discovered a replacement for Skewers.
Stuff I recently tried at Yi Soon, out of the self-serve case (these were all $1 each, I think):
- Milk tart- this had a funny flavor that I just couldn't figure out. Kind of dusty-tasting.
- Sponge cake rolls (chocolate, coffee, strawberry)- somewhat dry, but otherwise a delightful snack or light dessert, or even better with tea.
- Raisin roll- this had the same stiff sponge cake, rolled up with a small amount of cream filling, studded with raisins. As a raisin-non-lover, I thought this was quite good.
