Pizza in Pasadena
I happened to wander into Gelato de Roma in Pasadena and was wonderfully impressed with the pizza, which I believe to be the best in Pasadena.
The place will fool you as it looks like it serves gelato only. But the pizza is very good. It is a thin crust, with great sauce and good quality toppings. The pizza is priced very reasonably.
It's located on the south side of Colorado between Arroyo Parkway and Raymond.
Thanks for the rec. I had walked by a few months ago and grabbed a menu and decided I was going to try it, but have not had the chance as of yet. Will definitely try it now!!
I tried a gelato sample or two a while back from Gelato de Roma, and I skipped buying some. Although the gelato looked good, I didn't like the taste.
Has anyone tried the gelato there? I've noticed 2-3 new gelato places have sprung up directly in Old Pasadena on Colorado Blvd.
I will have to try the pizza at the Gelato de Roma the next time I have a chance. The place itself is usually busy.
there's definitely more competition for gelato in/around Pasadena these days. The Gelato de Roma is pretty good. They have a lunch special that includes a small gelato, that is a pretty good value. There's another place near the location of the former Sol y Azul, and that gelato is ok. At the recomendation of several hounds (and to satisfy my curiousity) I went to Bulgarini in Altadena on day after work, and the line was to the door! Word has definitely gotten out about this place. I like that fact that Bulgarini is a small shop with the owners present saying hello, asking people who they liked it, etc, but it seemed like an awfully out-of-the-way place for a product pretty similar to the other offerings around town. (At Bulgarini, I got the canteloupe that was pretty tasty, tho). Thus, my fave remains Tutti Gelati, in the courtyard of Old Town, directly underneath Cafe Santorini. They pack the cups very high, and it's nice to sit in that courtyard away from the traffic
Kotatsu, my friends got Tutti Gelati once before a movie at the Laemmle One Colorado. I have to admit, I liked the few bites that I had. Also, I agree that this Tutti Gelati location is much more accessible than the Bulgarini shop in Altadena. That said, one can also get Bulgarini at the Laemmle Playhouse 7, which is about 1 mile away from the main strip of Old Pas, in the Playhouse district, on Colorado Blvd.
Even though I have a feeling they'll be bad, I do want to try the other gelato spots on Colorado.
Thanks for your input. :)
"but it seemed like an awfully out-of-the-way place for a product pretty similar to the other offerings around town."
I thought that was the thing about these boards. Finding the best food wherever it happens to be located. Bulgarini is perhaps the best gelato in town [Pasadena, hands down] and so it takes a little onger to get there and the people watching is not as good as One Colorado. I guess I am lucky because Bulgarini is the closest gelato establishment to my house and there is no need to go to Pazzo unless I happen to somehow be in Silverlake. For me Tutti Gelati in nice but not Bulgarini.
For me these boards are for finding good places to eat wherever I may be. If someone wants to stay in Old Pas and not drive to Altadena, I would say that Tutti Gelati is also my current choice for that small strip.
If one wants to venture a mile further, get Bulgarini from the other Laemmle Theatre in Pasadena (the Playhouse 7).
And if one wants to go several miles away from Old Pasadena, there's the Bulgarini shop in Altadena. The shop has limited hours though. I wanted to go today, for example, and then I remembered that it's only open Wednesday-Sunday.
