My daughter has recently become enamoured of coca cola cake after eating it in a restaurant. I would love to make it for her. I know that there are lots of recipes out there, but I was hoping to get an extra-good one by posting on Chowhound. Any old family recipes out there? Thanks!

The Houston Chronicle ran an article about Coca Cola Chocolate Cake on June 1, 2004 after having previously requested recipe submissions from readers. They reported that most of the recipes they received were similar with slight variations. After taste tests, they printed the one which a reader attributed to the Cotton Country Collection Cookbook published in 1972 by the Junior Charity League of Monroe, La.

I've made this one a couple times. I'm not a great fan of chocolate cake but it got raves from everyone else with whom I shared it. Here is the recipe with the directions paraphrased:

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
2 sticks butter
1 cup Coca Cola
3 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups marshmallows
In a large bowl, combine flour and sugar; mix well.

In a saucepan, heat the butter, Coca Cola and cocoa until it reaches boiling. Pour over the flour and sugar. Add the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla. Mix well. Add the marshmallows and pour into a 9-by-13-inch greased cake pan. Bake 30-35 minutes.

FROSTING
1 stick butter
6 tablespoons Coca Cola
1 box confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup pecans or almonds

Cream the butter. Add the remaining ingredients and beat well. Pour over the cooled cake while still in the pan. This cake will keep for a few days if left in the pan in which it was baked.

The Atlanta J-C just published a recipe (scroll down). Similar to the HC one below. I am curious to try it but... so many recipes, so little time. And I hate things that are sort-of chocolate. Is Coca Cola cake like that or distinct?
