Sylvia's or Amy Ruth?

Which one would you choose and why? Coming to NY from Southern Calfiornia and have Amy Ruth's planned, but thought I'd check with the experts!

  1. Haven't been to Amy Ruth's, but Miss Mamie's Spoonbread on 110th is mighty good. Wasn't that impressed with Sylvia's, esp. the service. One place you must try on 125th is Wimp's. Excellent baked goods - try the Red Velvet Cake.

    1. Go to Amy Ruth's. While you are in the area you can grab a slice of red velvet from Make my Cake which is right down the block from Amy Ruth's. I would pass on Wimp's.

      1. Of the two, it's no contest: Amy Ruth's.

Sylvia's is a shell of what made it legendary, overrun as it is with tourists and their occasional tour buses. More importantly, the food, while fine, is nothing to remember. Amy Ruth's definitely is. Just thinking about it makes me hungry!

As an aside, even better than Amy Ruth's is Charles' Southern Style Kitchen on Frederick Douglass Blvd in Central Harlem. It's MUCH less convenient and not in a particularly scenic neighborhood, but the fried chicken is my favorite in the city, and the collards can't be beat. Lots of posts around here...just do a search.

Actually, I would advise them to stick with Amy Ruth's. I personally don't like Charles' food and it certainly won't offer the experience they probably want. Down on 116th there is plenty to see and they are within walking distance of 125th.
