Restaurants near/in Port Perry

I am having some visitors from Britain and will be taking them to my cottage near Bancroft. We go less busy routes (407 - Lakeridge Rd etc)and one of them goes near Port Perry. Does anyone know of a good (not chain) restaurant around there? Preferably something with a little ambience that is open for lunch.

  1. This might not be the spot for your lunch - but every time I go through Port Perry, I always buy a bottle of raspberry vinaigrette from The Pantry Shelf 172 Water Street. It is so good, and will be great for your salads at the cottage! Here's a website for businesses in Port Perry

    1. Not sure of your definition of ambiance, and if you mean elegance, read no further. But Haugen's Chicken and Ribs has food that's better than Swiss Chalet, is licensed, has homemade pies, fresh-cut fries, and good-sized portions, as I remember. That's where I go in Port Perry.

      1. I quite like the Piano Cafe ( for lunch. It's in a lovely old building on the main street. I think the menu is largely sandwiches, salads, quiche, that sort of thing. One of the few places to get a latte - it's definitely a Tim Horton's town!

Thanks for your suggestions. By "ambience" I mean something above a dive but am not looking for elegance. Other than right in Port Perry does anyone know any places in some of the smaller towns around there?

I have never tried this place, but it gets good reviews:

On Queen St, there is a lovely little cafe "Jesters" (Im pretty sure) it is right across from the IGA (maybe now a Sobeys) store there, wonderful casual-upscale food, great atmosphere, great patio.

Jesters Court ... correct, directly across from IGA maybe Sobeys ..
Steak and Portobello salad has been pretty good to me ... wraps are nice as well ...

Not the least bit upscale is the Highland Family Rest .. Peas and potatoes for the most part ... quite the massive turkey dinner is served there ...

Port Perry Halibut House - I was there once and don't relly remember what I had so can't recall it was impressive ... not thinking so or I would recall ...

        2. You take exactly the same route that I do from Toronto to Bancroft. I've stopped a couple of times at Halibut House Fish And Chips (985-0880). It's on Scugog St. in Port Perry. It's a fairly nice looking restaurant and if your visitors want the same food as back home, this may be the place!

Thanks for the recs. Unfortunately Pepper Berries isn't open for lunch. The other thoughts sound promising.

          2. Court Jester's is a great place for lunch. Decent beer selection too and a local ghost.
