Best Koshary in Egypt or Cairo?
Hi folks . . .
So I know everyone in Egypt has a Koshary place they will swear up and down is the best. What is your favorite place? Why?
Mine is Koshary Tahrir in Medinat Nasr on Abbas al-A'aad Street. Even though it is ridiculously far from where I live I make sure to go there whenever I am in Medinat Nasr. Can't put my finger on what it is exactly that makes it better . . . it just tastes aweesome!

Well, I ve only eaten once in al-Tahrir. My husband brought takeaway from there (although it was ridiculously far from the place we were staying at) because he said that is the place which will least likely poison us :D He thinks aaall kosharz restaurants are a potential life threat :D
To make the long story short: it was a disappointment because it contained patheticly small amount of chickpeas and onion and the sauce was so thin and had slightly any taste. Is there a difference do you think between takeaway and having it on the spot? -
hey guys, looks like the only Egyptian in the site ... intruder u may call me,
just wanted to say if u r looking for the Koshary Tahrir that have the (KT) sign and still near from Tahrir Square where the AUC used to be, then i suggest u take Talaat Harb (6al3at 7arb) street and ask about (Shawarby) st. u will find the Koshary shop before intering the Shawarby street .. u can googleearth for it.oh.. by the way, if someone manages to ho to Nasr city there's a known area called (Mawqaf El Sabea) or ( maw2af elsabe3) where u will find three restaurants .. one of them is Koshary El Madina ...... for me this is the most delicious koshary i've ever tasted and more when u eat outside .. it really gives an Egyptian flavour to the desh.
have a nice stay in Egypt byez -
My little sister Alya makes the best koshary I have ever had "that's my favorite place!" lol. I would have to say that during my long visit in Egypt with out mama's good cooking? I had the opportunity to check out almost all of Egypt's oldest "fast-food" joints and the one thing I did noticed for sure is the stark and sad difference between the good old koshary at the stands and the not so good koshary that restaurants try to serve up to tourist in Cairo. So if your ever in Cairo looking for a good koshary place go down the tightest unpaved road in the smallest neighoborhood and follow your nose to a little shiny hidden hot dog looking stand with a bunch of cab drivers around it clamoring for a plate and then I'm sure you will not be disappointed! and that's real talk!

Social obligations surrounding Ramadan and the Eid cut into our discretionary meals while in Cairo but we did hit a few Koshary places. The best we encountered was Ma'alama, on the street just north of Rifa'i mosque. In addition to Koshary they serve a pasta dish which looked awesome.
While a nice environment, Abu Tarek did not impress. And what's with the up front payment?

re: mindca
A lot of people had recommended Abou Tarek to me, and I finally went last week. However, I was disappointed.
First, we tried to sit on the second(American)/first(Egyptian) floor and the waiter pointed for us to go upstairs even though there were tables open. When we got upstairs, I tried to order a small koshary and the waiter told me that on the third(American)/second(Egyptian) floor you could only get the 5LE "Special Koshary" . . . and said that we would have to go downstairs to get a "small" . . . obviously they try to make all the tourists or tourist-looking people buy the large 5LE koshary which is just obnoxious.Second, the koshary was disappointing, and just average. Plenty of places in Cairo have much better koshary. Service, as is usual at koshary places, was rude.
However, the atmosphere is nice and you will find lots of families and couples having a meal out. Also, it is air-conditioned, which is nice . . . but you might as well just go to Koshary Tahrir which is close, easier to find, and has much better koshary.

I was recently in Cairo for two months studying at the AUC. While I didn't sample enough different koshary restaurants to proclaim one as the best of Cairo, I did go about 3-5 times a week to koshary el-tahrir on sharia tahrir down the street from medinat tahrir. Not sure if the location in medinat nasr is related. a small is 3 EGP, a medium is 4EGP, and i cant imagine one person ordering a large.
I think what made their koshary so much better is that they put much more deep-fried onions in it than other places. I like my koshary a little cruncy.›2 Replies-

re: wujon
yeah, i also can't figure out if the two are related. the KT out in Medinat Nasr (and with various other chains around the city & country) has orange and green signs, while the one on Tahrir Street has blue and red, and no one that i've asked seems to know whether they are part of the same chain or not!

re: blexo
ok, this sounds awesome. u will have to let me know if you are looking for a fellow hound to koshary crawl with! i can bug my egyptian friends for their recs for must-try places.
other than koshary tahrir, al-omda's koshary is also awesome, but i have to disagree on the felfela rec . . . i had theirs a month or two ago and i wasn't impressed, but who knows it might have been an off day.
