The Roxton - wow!
Many thanks to the chowhounds who've recommended the Roxton; I went tonight and it was TERRIFIC.
Generally I'm leery of places that get called unpretentious - I assume that's either code for "reverse pretension" (like, I dunno, Sneaky Dee's) or for just plain seedy.
But The Roxton was the real thing - relaxed, diverse crowd, reasonably priced, and *really good* food. It reminded me a bit of the Bellvue Diner, although to be honest the Roxton's food is better.
We had crostini (chevre, pesto and red peppers), a fantastic steak sandwich with mesclun salad and roasted potatoes, and falling-apart ribs with a superb vinegary red cabbage slaw and mashed potatoes. It was all flavourful, well-spiced, and well-balanced.
Its one serious failing: When we arrived they were playing some kind of ambient, but sadly that soon switched to godawful rockabilly. Which went on and on and on.
Regardless though ... I wish it were nearer to me; I'd be there every day :-)
