Home Depot (and I would guess Lowe's), WalMart and Safeway all tend to carry hickory or mesquite chips for BBQ. Other woods- cherry, apple, maple, alder aren't as prevalent. Barbecues Galore has a large if pricy selection, but I checked and the only East Bay location is Pleasanton.

Sometimes Wal-Mart has the bigger chunks (I believe I have seen them there), and Barbecues Galore definitely does. I would call Home Depot. The small chips do work very well for a lot of smoking using gas or charcoal grills or normal size smokers, the big hunks work great in the huge smokers.

When you do find some hickory.

Make sure to soak it first in water and use it sparingly at first.
Its very easy to over do it and have everything taste like bacon.

Which is ok for Pork, but not that good for Chicken, beef and fish.

There used to be a BBQ (smokers) manufacturer located near 98th and San Leandro Blvd in Oakland that sold all kinds of BBQ smoking woods and supplies.

I will drive by and see if its still there?

For price, quality, and selection, you cannot beat the Lazzari distributorship in Brisbane. It may be on the other side of the bay, but definitely worth the trip for any serious smoking action.
