Elmer's Diner in Danbury, CT
Went there last night and had one of worst and most expensive meals in years. My wife ordered enchiladas with beef and chicken and got three soft taco shells with chicken pieces. It was covered with dried cheese and and three state wrappers. The bread came out stale with bad tasting oleo on the side. I ordered a tex mex shrimp dish. It had four grilled, overdone shrimp on a bed of a pound of yellow rice surrounded by chinese stir fried vegetables out of a frozen bag. The owner came over twice to brag about his cooking. (I suspect he well knew about the crap he was serving us.)
The place is only a week old and we have forgiven a lot of startups for small errors, BUT this place has no quality and certainly no value. The bill with three soft drinks and tip was $35. No refills on ice tea. Oh yes, it included two cups of lobster bisque with imitation something in it.
As a resident of Queens, NY I have pretty high standards for diners. I am a weekend resident of New Fairfield in the summer and always on the lookout for new places to try.
Given the (lack of) quality you describe it looks like a place to avoid. The News Times said the guy worked at some other diner and finally opened up his own place...so I was expecting to hear something better I guess.
I guess only Greeks can really run a diner well :-)
Rich, Contrary to the previous statement, I think Elmer's Diner is a great diner. Maybe the particular dish the individual above was not to his liking (because I just had the Enchiladas yesterday and fully enjoyed them.) Thats pretty funny actually that you are from Queens because I am from Bayside myself. Coming from the plethora of local diners, you have to understand that the dishes in CT are prepared differently from NY. As far as food quality goes, I think the above review is inaccurate, maybe the particular dish(es) were not to his standards but I suggest you give it a try for yourself and post your own review.
