San Soo Kap San ...

... on 171st & Northern Blvd: thought the kalbi and bolgogi were quite good. A little disappointed 'cause of the lack of charcoal but the quality was there; very friendly service - this is a hit and run initial impression, we were in and out.

Time/opportunity allowing, I prefer the much more leisurely, "off-hours" feasts I used to have at (the former?) Sol Bawoo on 149th Place where the panchan used to draw up some interesting question marks ( as in, what exactly am I sampling ( in a good sense ) ... we're, admittedly, novices to this cuisine ). This place has apparently changed hands a number of times but I've always been drawn to the "off-boulevard feel".

What are your recommendations for lighter, summer fare along these lines?

This is one of my favorite Korean restaurants in Queens. I think their meat is the best quality compared to many other Korean places - important if you're going there for BBQ. I love their Kalbi, but sometimes have the plain sirloin steak which they serve with a salt/sesame oil dipping sauce on the side - very delicious. I think their Yook Gae Jang (not sure if the spelling is accurate) is the best of the other Korean places I've been to. I also recommend the Soon Doo Boo Ji Gae (maybe wrong spelling). These two are spicy.

Can anyone confirm that the Northern Blvd. location doesn't have charcoal barbecue? I've seen fairly recent reports from the Union Street location that say it still does.

San soo kap san does what i call a half version meaning they do use wood chip but they put it on a gas stove.Essentially the meat is cooked with the heat from the wood chip and the gas is used to control the flames.Their are a few places that has been using this system but it doed not mean it is unauthentic.Nam oh jung use thissystem also .
