Fun, Inexpensive Manhattan Restaurants

This is very ill-defined request, but my cousin is in Manhattan for the first time next weekend. I'm looking for trendy, fun, inexpensive (under $30/pp without alcohol) restaurants that are unique to NY (i.e., you can't find similar in the Chicago area). We're open to anywhere in Manhattan. Thank you in advance!

Go to a big Dim Sum parlor in Chinatown, such as Triple Eight on East Broadway built into the base of the Manhattan Bridge. The last time I was in Chicago, there was nothing like that there.
