We are training a puppy for the service-dog program and need to take her as many places as we can...including restaurants. Since she is not old enough to earn her service dog vest, it is difficult to take her into some places without a long drawn-out explanation. Does anyone know of places that allow dogs in general? I have a few restaurants our trainer recommends, but more variety is always appreciated!

Excellent suggestions. Guess we'll just have to drive a few more miles to get to the good stuff, eh? Thanks again. We'll try them all! I love Tijuana Flats...hadn't thought of that one before, but one just opened up on SR56. How's the food at Mad Dogs? I've heard of MacDinton's as a great pub, but no friends have mentioned Mad Dogs & Englishmen yet.

The food at Mad Dogs is excellent. I love the burgers there...and of course the beer is great. I love it there in the winter and fall when it's nice and cool outside. They will bring water for your pup as well. Also, their brunch menu looks great, although i've never ordered from it...hard to sway from the burger.

Thanks! That's the key...some outdoor seating places may *look* pet friendly, but their staff makes it very clear they are not.

Still wish I could find more places up this way. Adding an hour drive to a grumbling stomach is never any good. I suppose I should've said "New Tampa" in my original post. We'll try some of these when we have the luxury of extra time and don't mind the jostling through traffic.

I lived in new tampa for about 10 years and can't think of a single place that might be pet friendly. not really an outdoor eating area of town. give south tampa a try...it'll be worth your drive.

Is my recollection flawed, or didn't the FL legislature pass a piece of lesilation last year making it illegal to forbid dogs at any restaurant with outdoor tables. (You and doggie have to sit outside and server may not touch doggie.) I offer this tidbit only because - by legislative fiat - any restaurant with an outdoor section is now dog-friendly. So go find your favorite spot.

I looked online and found that in 2006 Governer Jeb Bush signed a bill allowing restaurants to submit for a permit to allow you to sit with your dog outdoors and eat. If you are not certain you might want to call ahead.

PCC - no, not illegal to forbid....but rather legal to allow. If a restaurant with outdoor seating wants to be dog friendly, they can legally. If they don't want dogs, they definitely don't have to allow them.
