Homemade BBQ Sauce Suggestions for This Brisket Recipe?

I love Epicurious's recipe for Lazy Texas Brisket in which you slow cook spice-rubbed brisket for hours, but the homemade sauce is a bit thin and cloying for my taste.

Any suggestions for other homemade BBQ sauce recipes that might work?

My mother along with other ingredients, would always add a package of Mrs. Grass onion soup mix - just sprinkle on the top. She didn't do BBQ but, maybe adding to your recipe would help....
