LEATHERBY'S CAFE ROUGE

DINED AT LEATHERBY'S CAFE ROUGE THE OTHER NIGHT TO FIND OUT THE CHEF, MARK GOLD IS NO LONGER PRESENT. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND HIM? HE WAS A VERY TALENTED CHEF AND WE ENJOYED HIS FOOD TREMENDOUSLY. DID HE RELOCATE BACK TO LOS ANGELES? IN ANY EVENT, THE MEAL WAS OK, RESTAURANT WAS DEAD AND SEEMED TO BE MISSING HIS ENERGY....

  1. Mark is opening another restaurant in LA.
    We were at Leatherby's last night and had a very nice TM.
    4 hrs later we finished and were very happy.
    Restaurant was empty but is full on Performance nights.
    Some of the best food in OC.
    The Sous Chef Tim is very capable and will be able to handle the kitchen.

    1. I was given the "heads up" that he was leaving back when I had New Year's Eve dinner there with my family after a performance. Very personable and friendly, Mark Gold walked up to our table and chatted about his dishes. He readily admitted that not all of the courses on his prix fixe menu that night were homeruns (he served a cold foie grois puree with a chocolate sauce which just didn't work at all). He also told us that by Spring 2007, he planned on leaving Leatherby's to get the ball rolling on his own restaurant in Santa Monica. He was definitely helped by that glowing three-star review in the L.A. Times. Ultimately, though, I think giving the restaurant the same rating as "Stonehill Tavern" is a bit of a stretch, especially at the prices they're charging.

        I've had better food in my 3 visits at Leatherby's than at Stonehill Tavern (2 visits)
