Dinner Cruises Around Manhattan

rdflig May 18, 2007 06:08 AM

I'm planning a 30th surprise birthday party this summer and was thinking this could be fun, especially if its a nice night. I know some of the boat companies are a little cheesy, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Also, I'd like to avoid those boats that have a set dinner, as this group is more of a cocktail party group - appetizers and drinks, etc.

Thanks!

I've been on a couple of these, thankfully each time at company expense. The views are wonderful but the food is pretty bad - think of the worst wedding meal you've ever had and then deduct 20%. Just doing apps and drinks should keep the damage at a minimum.

Assuming you're group is small enough (20 or less) there's a sailing ship (a schooner I think) that operates out of the South St. seaport that can be hired if you give enough advance notice. (Disclaimer - I haven't been on this particular ship in years so things may have changed.)

Was thinking 30 ppl, but could possibly lower that number for the right boat. Do you know the name of the S St Seaport one?

        Still sailing, still for hire.

I have also been on company-related parties on these boats (don't even know which ones, but they leave from the west side in the 40's).

They are dreadful. Yes, the views are nice, but that does not make up for the whole rest of the experience. In fact, this year's event is coming up in June and we just got the invitation. My co-worker and I laugh every year when we get the invitation because about 3 years ago, we swore that we'd never attend another boat ride party. They are that bad. And you're stuck on the boat and can't leave!

Do yourself a favor if you care about your friends and family...find another place to hold the party!

I am going to make a crass suggestion. Why not slink off with your friend and eat on your own and just drink on the cruise?

Not a crass suggestion at all! But I'm not a big drinker.

Valerie - I know what you mean. I think I went on one of them once a long time ago (really long time ago that's why I sent the post around). I'm looking for a smaller boat that does catering, or even lets you bring your own caterers in. Hopefully it won't be too bad, but at the rate I'm going w/ the cheesiness factor, it is looking better and better that this will end up being at a resturant...

Why not try the NY Water Taxi. Their boats hold up to 74 people and I think you provide your own catering. www.nywatertaxi.com

UGH, the worst unless in a BIG BIG party. Stay away from Spirit of NY / NJ. Entertainment is horrible, the food is mediocre. Service is ok. Unless your're renting the entire vessel I'd never do again. We sat IN BETWEEN a wedding party. 1/2 wedding was on one side of the dance floor, the other half on the other side of the ship. Wouldnt do if we won free tickets; I'd rather take the circle line!
