My friend is in town and we need to get breakfast on a Friday morning. We live in Bernal, but are open to going anywhere in the city. I'd love to take her to a cute place like Ti Couz or Foreign Cinema ... but I know those spots will not be open at 9 a.m.ish. Any ideas? Thanks.

Boulette's Larder in the Ferry Building. Eat at the table in the kitchen. Fabulous food; great coffee; fun ambience; decadent experience. They open early.

Modern Tea is a nice newish place in Hayes Valley. I checked the website and they open at 9AM on Fridays. We had Sat. brunch there a couple of weeks ago and it was fun and there are nice big windows and high ceilings. There's even a tea bar at the front (they take their tea very seriously). In fact, they only serve tea (I think) so if you are a diehard coffee drinker, it might not work. But, they serve each tea in a unique pot and make delicious breads to go with them (cherry coconut, etc.) They also have frittatas, cornmeal waffles and other stuff. I noted to myself it would be a good place to take visitors and recommended it to a friend whose mom was in town (don't know if they went).

Boulette's is good if you don't mind going all the way to the Ferry Building. It is a unique experience...
