Time Out New York [moved from Manhattan board]

geg5150 May 16, 2007 02:44 PM

Since we've moved to the east coast, we're planning to hit all of the places that we want to visit more...NYC, of course is at the top of the list.

In anticipation of our visits, the very thoughtful BF got me a subscription to Time Out New York. What can you tell me? Is it a reliable source for restaurant news/reviews, etc. Any other resources (aside from Chowhound) that you can recommend?

Time Out NY is alright, but I've always thought it was more NY-lite than real substance. I prefer New York Magazine because a) there's more to read, and b) they review and cover things with a bit more substance. Time Out excels at the "Best of..." lists of all kinds that poll readers and I think they do a better job with cheaper and quirkier stuff of all kinds, not just restaurants.

Agreed. NY Mag has better restaurant coverage. Some other recommendations:

NY Times Diners Journal - Frank Bruni -his blog on nytimes.com
Any of the many blogs - Eater, nycnosh, bigapplediningguide, mona's apple, strong buzz, restaurant girl to name a few...

So that you don't have to spend money on another subscription, New York magazine is online at nymag.com. They publish all the restaurant reviews online, as well as a blog called Grubstreet.

TONY's restaurant reviews have really slipped the past couple of years, in my opinion.
