Z&Y update

Z&Y Garden, a.k.a. Sam Lok, in SF Chinatown, is closed for remodeling May 1 - June 8. Remodeling is actually going on, so I assume they're really going to re-open. Let's hope.

I stopped by to check myself and came away unconcerned. The signs said "Repair and Remodel," were very specific about reopening June 8 or sooner, and even posted a number for further information. And yes, actual work was evident.

Star Lunch down the street, on the other hand, still has had no apparent activity, and the "Returning in March" sign is still on the door.

Rather unusual for a Chinese restaurant to remodel without a change of ownership and an accompanying change of operation. Does happen occassionally--I believe it did happen with New Moon over on Stockton a few years ago. But I'd be a little dubious until I actually saw it reopen as Z&Y.

I would agree with you that when you see closed for remodeling you a change in ownership. But I walked by yesterday and this remodeling does not have that look. The windows are not papered over and the tables and chairs are somewhat neatly stocked in the dining room and the work looks like is in the kitchen. So maybe is a kitchen repair. We will have to wait and see.

Just talked to them. They expect to re-open next week. Hurray for an actual remodel and not a loss of Chinatown's only Sichuan restaurant!

Oh thank goodness. I've been craving some red oil pig ear. :)

Just walked by today. Looks like the new date for re-opening is July 4.
