places to eat for $10 and under - downtown LA

looking for places to eat which will cost us $10 or less per a meal. Websites and prices would be great also. We would prefer as close to downtown as possible as our hostel is based there and we will be travelling by public transport. We would be particularly interested in sandwiches, salads, pasta, pizza, burgers, or restaurants that serve these foods. Thanks

  1. Here are some:

    Mendocino Farms: http://www.mendocinofarms.com/
Yorkshire Grill, it's a deli, no website; 610 W. Sixth.
    Clifton's: http://www.cliftonscafeteria.com/
    Casey's: http://bigcaseys.com/

Edit: sorry, did not read your post completely. I don't think Clifton's would fit into what you're looking for, but it is very historic L.A.

    1. Some of my regular spots:

      Grand Central Market (Hill/3rd) http://www.grandcentralsquare.com/
      Phillippe's (Ord/Alameda) http://www.philippes.com/
      Daikokuya Ramen (1st/Central) http://www.daikoku-ten.com/dk_home.html
      Pitfire Pizza (2nd/Main) http://www.pitfirepizza.com/main.02.2...

I second the Grand Central Market. Lot's of great food at a great price in there.

      2. How close are you to the Bonaventure? They have a food court in there, my favorite cheap restaurant inside is Olive Branch, salads, lebanese pizza, and lunch specials such as "sole fish and rice" or chicken.

There are several places with a choice of salads, one is Koo Koo Roo half way between the Omni Hotel and Wells Fargo plaza.

La Salsa is also good for salads, burritos, etc.

LADWP ( Department of Water and Power) cafeteria is open to the public for lunch and would have all of the above.

If you don't know about the DASH bus, be sure to check out

        1. The Bishop Coffee and Gourmet at 8th and Grand is great--opens I believe at 6 am and closes at 11 pm. Great sandwiches (try the chicken curry) and soups.
Fernando's Tacos at Figueroa and Olympic (in the car wash) is cheap and delicious--3 tacos and a drink for $5. Downside, he closes at 5 pm
New York Pizza Next Door at 8th and Flower is great and they have a special for $5.95.

          1. Colori, 420-something West 8th. Most entrees just under $10.00.

            1. Loose leaf for salads on 6th between grand and hope great salads for under $7.00
Tacos mexico $1.00 tacos on 9th and broadway south of Eastern Columbia
Nazos for sandwiches on 8th and Flower; under $7.00 includes chips
I also 2nd pitfire pizza and colori.

              1. Try Banquette Cafe, 4th & Main, next to Pete's (which is over your budget).

                1. Cafe Rossini on Olive between 5th and 6th is one of my favorite downtown lunch spots on workdays. They have a great french dip (try the chicken!), two sides (choice of various fresh salads and things including some really tasty Jell-O!), and a drink for about $8. No website, address is 543 S. Olive.

                  1. Take a look at the menu for City Kitchen Cafe. Lot's of good sandwiches, etc.

This is actually a catering operation with a cafe that they have opened to take advantage of the foot traffic in the downtown area.

                    1. I work across from the Blue Cube (2nd & Broadway). I get the chicken fried rice (under $5) there. If you ask nicely and give a day's notice the owner will make fried mandoo for you. Good stuff!
