Ft Lauderdale to Boca - inexpensive

j
JaneRI May 15, 2007 11:30 AM

Hi - I'll be visiting family in So FLA next week. My mother is going down as well and I'd like a few recs of places to take her. She's 72 and has rather plain tastes. I'd like something w/a vacation feel....nice outdoor seating, ocean views, something like that. My brother tends to frequent places like Applebee's and Ruby Tuesday, and I'd like to avoid that on this trip.

TIA!

First off, I think downtown Hollywood is a great option for you. You can walk around, enjoy the ambiance, and have a wealth of restaurants to choose from.

I know you said "Ft. Lauderdale to Boca" but one of my favorite, inexpensive, true "Florida" spots is the Old Key Lime House in Lantana (about 10-15 minutes north of Boca). It's on the water, and laid back in an Old-Florida style. I absolutely love it there!

I second the Hollywood rec. It's about 15 min south of Ft Laud. In Hollywood, I like Universe Cafe - right on Hollywood Blvd, which is the main drag. They have good, eclectic food, a fun outdoor eating spot, and on Sunday afternoon, they have live music. Hubby and i went there for a drink on a Sat night and they had live music inside.

Too bad your mom's tastes are plain. La Barraca (on a side street between Hollywood Blvd and Harrison St which are the 2 main drags) gets GREAT reviews. It's tapas and spanish food. Looks divine and is my next stop in the 'Wood.

Your Mom also may like O'Hara's, also on Hollywood Blvd. It's a fun spot, food is pretty good. Not so Irish particularly, IMHO. Later at nights, it can definitely turn into a Meet Market for the Middle Aged set.

La Barraca is a lot of fun and has very good Spanish tapas. Love the New Orleans singer at Universe Cafe on weekend afternoon. Next door is Chocolada, a Russian Bakery, with live music Friday and Saturday nights. Always crowded. On the other side of the Universe is La Dolce Vita with excellent gelato. All are in downtown Hollywood and not expensive. Also like Sushi Blues on Harrison Street with good Asian food and jazz and blues entertainment. Las Brisas, Sugar Reef, and Istanbul are on the Broadwalk in Hollywood and have great views of the beach and ocean with good food. Enjoy!

I too love Sushi Blues. I was just thinking that the OP's mother prob wouldn't enjoy it due to her plain tastes. I'm going to check out some of your other recs!

By the way, make a reservation if you want to go to SB on a Sat night.

How far of a drive is the Old Key Lime House from Ft. Lauderdale?

I think most of the replys so far haven't carefully read your request. Hollywood is a silly suggestion, as its not in your geo range and there's nothing there worth the trip. You'll spend in gas what you save on food. If you want a "vacationy" feel, you'll want to stay near the beach. Note that "inexpensive" is a tricky word in South Florida, but there are plenty of reasonable priced places along A1A. Starting in Lauderdale, there are several places at lauderdale beach by Las Olas Blvd. Cafe Del Mar and Cafe Sangria are great for breakfast or lunch and offer airy dining and great ocean views. Up a bit is "Beach Place", where you can get cheap if not awful food at the very vacationy LuLu's Bait Shack (cajun) or Sloppy Joes or Hooters (your brother will like that). Shooters by Oakland Park Blvd is a great place for dinner or on a weekend afternoon with its lovely intercoastal views and casual menu. Up torward boca, deerfield beach has some inexpensive places. JBs is the best known, but lots of smaller places like Flannagins. The beautiful thing is that there are no Applebys or Rubys on A1A! Also if you are in Ft Lauderdale, do spend an afternoon on Las Olas Blvd towards downtown, where your mother will enjoy the quaint shops. Enjoy before they tear them down. The prices are a bit higher on Las Olas, But Cafe Europa, Panini Grill or Le Bonn Crepe are inexpensive and quite good, and there is a very nice Cheesecake factory as well. Note that Cafe Europa includes the tip on the bill so check carefully if you go there!

check out Deerfield Beach, a small seaside resort town with a few bars/restaurants directly on the boardwalk. This time of year easy to park.

Obviously you didn't try to go to JBs last night. No parking for miles!

I was there Saturday night and parked with the valet!! got lucky I guess as they closed the valet at around 8.30 (just as it rained). Guess it depends on time of year, day of the week and weather like everything else in Florida.

I don't eat lunch out very often, so I'm not sure I have a favorite. Sangrias is new and has an interesting menu and is right across from the beach. Note that the beach area in Ft Lauderdale is very casual, so there aren't a lot of high end places. Damon's up the coast a bit (towards deerfield beach) is good on weekends but I don't know how they do during the week. And of course there is JBs in Deerfield, the bomb in the area. JBs is the place on weekends.

I wouldn't recommend Sangria's the waiter there added 10 dollars onto his already 8 dollar tip. So he got a 18 dollar tip.

How is the food at Arubas? I'm not looking for fine dining....but it'd be nice to sit outside w/a place w/decent food at least.

On a trip to Ft L years ago, my mom came home raving about some chowder along the Riverwalk - "best N.E. chower I've ever had". I challenged that strong statement but later that same year I had it and ....she was right! Don't recall the name of the place but it was right next to a footbridge along the river. Very sports-bar-ish indoors. The outdoor seating had misters like in AZ.

I'll pay attention to the Deerfields recs....we'll be in Coral Springs w/my brother so a bit north of Ft L is better than a bit south.

Jane I hope you have a great time on your visit. Let us know if you want any Coral Springs recs. Though Lasolasdude feels strongly otherwise, if I had an older person to take out in S Florida, I would still do Hollywood. It's just a bit of a slower pace - kind of like what you'll get at las Olas, only you'll likely be able to park very close to where you want to go. With that said, I agree that it's about 30-40 min from H'wood to CS. So wherever you go, have fun!

PS Havent' been to Aruba since everything I seem to hear about it is that it's just ok. Being that I live here, I usually go other places. But it's been described exactly as you've said - nice outdoor area and decent food. Pretty expensive, I think.

Also in Deerfield, we like the Whale's Rib. It's raw bar/seafood hole in the wall - good for lunch or a cheap dinner.

Thanks! Any good breakfast joints in CS? I am especially partial to southern food.....biscuits w/sausage gravy, grits, etc.

I don't dislike Hollywood, its just not worth going out of your way to go there. If *cheaper* is very important, Hollywood will do. I don't like Hollywood at night, a lot of "applebys" type people around; but I admit I go to LaBarraca for Tapas often.

I can definitely see the appeal, but I don't think I'll bother crossing Ft L just for shops/boardwalk/etc. I'd like to drive her around Boca, gawk at some nice houses, maybe as far north as Palm Beach (I don't think she's been).

Mizner Park is nice to walk around and there are some cafes etc such as Marks in the Park and Max's grill, inexpensive at lunch times and not all that bad at dinner either if you choose carefully. There is also a Ruby Tuesdays if you want something chain-ish.

Then a drive along A1A to look at the houses and on to Delray (Atlantic Ave) where you will find Luna Rosa (good breakfasts) on A1A on the corner of Atlantic and plenty of cafes, restaurants a little west on Atlantic. Louis Louis make great pizzas and at night Elwoods Bar on the train tracks has excellent bands and it's a very cheap bar and you can gawk at the Harleys parked outside.

I just ate there. The food was strickly okay, however my waiter had about two tables of four people tops and was never around. When he was around he talked to me and my friend from across the resturant. He was just rude. Then at the end of our meal, he gave us the check with all the things we ordered. I gave him my credit card and he just brought back my cerdit card copy. Good thing I noticed tip was included. He was trying to get extra money from us. He already got an eight dollar tip. I knew tip was already included so I left him $0.00. The next day I looked at my credit card and it was ten dollars more than what I signed for at the resturant. He gave him self an extra tip. He got an 16 dollar tip and ofcourse...there is no phone number to the resturant. Awesome!!!
