Equally great sushi and not-sushi

Greetings, hounds. As an engagement present, we are treating good friends to the meal of their choice in the city. They have chosen sushi. That's great--I love good sushi, but my boyfriend doesn't eat any fish at all. I've never had a non-fish entree at a Japanese restaurant...so I'm looking for some place where the sushi and non-fish options are equally great.

Looking to spend around $50pp incl. maybe one drink pp. Neighborhood is unimportant. TIA.

I have two suggestions:

Kanoyama (11th St @2nd Ave)where sushi are excellent (especially at the sushi bar) with great cooked food.

Le Miu (Ave A) where cooked food is excellent and contemporary sushi and sashimi is great!
