40th birthday...3 nights to slurge...
My husband and I are visiting the beginning of December...I know it is far off...we want to eat at three outstanding restaurants with one being semi-romantic. I have a few restaurants I would like to try and would love any suggestions.
Gramercy Tavern or Eleven Madison Park
Thanks for the help!
Board regulars know that I'm a huge fan of Eleven Madison Park. Therefore, no question, in my view, that it should one of the three restaurants you go to when you are here.
While I've had a couple of good meals at Bolo, I would never put it on any list of outstanding restaurants.
When you list "Lidia's," I presume you are referring to Lidia Bastianich. She is involved in three restaurants: Felidia, her original, upscale place; Becco, which she partners with her son, Joe; and the newest, very upscale Del Posto, where she is a partner with Joe and Mario Batali. Of these three, I've only been to Becco. I found the pastas very disappointing, and the noise level hideously high.
Chanterelle's dining room is very formal. Last time I was there everything was superb. I have been to Felidia's and thought it was a bit overpriced. Have also been to Becco and it is noisy and lively. Becco is an inexpensive pre-theater or lunch place, nothing outstanding (not a special occasion place by any means). It has been awhile since I have been to Gramercy Tavern. We really enjoyed it, we were in the main dining room. We are partial to Danny Meyer's restaurants.
Babbo is a great idea. I'm not a fan of Bolo--food is uninspired. Also consider Bouley, Fleur de Sel, Wallse, and Perry St.
My take will be:
- Eleven Madison Park
- Babbo if you can get reservation; Del Posto if not (and you can hit two birds with one stone at Del Posto if you want to try both Batali's and Lidia's restaurants)
- Instead of Chanterelle, go for Bouley
As others mentioned, no need to consider Bolo. It is unimpressive.
