Hi,

Uncle is in town visiting from NYC....

looking for the current #1 go-to place for Southern Italian (i.e. red sauce) in OC.

I went to Luigi's D'Italia in Anaheim about 1.5 years ago and I thought it was o.k.........
but I'm looking to do better. Can I?

Thanks.

Luigi's is tasty but it always smell better than it tastes. Have you tried Marri's on Katella and (I think) West?

I thought that Carolina's at Chapman/West had pretty good red sauce dishes. So long as you stick to the basics and don't order their messed up fancy dishes (Chicken ala Anthony, etc.)

I like Carolina's too, and you're absolutely right -- it's good for normal dishes but stay away from imaginative fare. I wouldn't call it the best in OC (while I'm all for holes-in-the-wall, matched silverware and wine service that doesn't include pouring glasses to the brim have to count for something) but it's quite tasty, it's good value, the service is nice and pleasant, and you get that little dish of spumoni at the end.

Finbar, on PCH & 5th in Seal Beach.
Lugatti's, 4th & Walnut, downtown Huntington Beach. Also their sister restaurant, Lino's, Edinger & Edwards, Huntington Beach.

They have the best Italian sausage I've ever tasted -- and I grew up in New Jersey with frequent trips to Brooklyn.

Right, and I think with an out-of-towner, Sabatino's will make an excellent destination with its location and its charachter, as if the sausage wasnt reason enough.
