Good Indian Cuisine

We're fans of Roti in West Portal and wondered if people have recent recommendations about other Indian food in SF.

Shalimar! Right next to Dottie's True Blue Cafe. It is not fancy. It's a dive for sure, but their food is delicious, and they have a few variety meats.

Speaking of good Indian food, anybody know if Sultan is closed. I understand they may be moving, but are they currently open for business?

In another thread, someone reported 1 or 2 days ago that when they walked by, the new Sultan location (next to Naan-n-Curry on O'Farrell) has not yet opened:

        Hopefully it will soon, though!

I think Tobias is trying to find out if they are open in ANY location.

          My answer:
I know they are not open at their NEW location because I walked past it yesterday but I'm not sure their OLD location closed. I searched for the thread that discussed it but didn't find it. Then I googled them and called - no answer. You may want to call again during dinner hours to double-check, but I would assume the original location is closed.

Oh, good call, I totally misread that. I remember walking by the original location recently, and it looked to be closed.

Hey, thanks for posting over here (we were discussing on a diff board).
...so specifically which dishes are you a fan of at Roti? I have never been. Anything REALLY stand out? This is the old chef from Indian Oven, no?

The fresh fish tandoori (I may butcher how things should be named and, if so, I apologize and welcome corrections) has been good. The fish changes, I presume depending on whats fresh (or at least I hope its based on that). The Rogan Josh, a lamb curry is quite good. The Naan is exceptional, compared to all other Naan I've eaten.

I thought the Biryani dishes left something to be desired, personally.

I can't make any claims about authenticity here. I find the food to be quite good and consistent and we like the atmosphere and service quite a lot. I think the Indian Oven closed before we moved to town, so I'm not sure about whether the chef is the same.

It's been reported here that the former chef from Indian Oven opened Aslam's Rasoi in the Mission.

I think Indian Oven has a lot of former chefs, not all of them worth seeking out.

That's very true. Aslam's one to follow apparently, haven't tried it.

Anyone been to Indian Oven recently? Downhill reports after the ownership change, but how about now?
