  1. If you mean 43rd bet. 9 & 10th, I can highly recommend Le Madeleine or Esca (across the street from each other).

I am not sure what moderate prices entails, but if you have one meal in Hells Kitchen i think it has to be Esca at this point and they are somewhat reasonable. I have been to rachels 2-3 times and am not a big fan; especially of the mac and cheese (though living in Georgia may have spoiled me). West Bank is good, I am not as big fan of Marseille as others (RGR) but it is solid. A little uptown is Eatery which is very good (especially the mac and cheese, oddly enough). Lots of little places up and down 9th ave are solid esp. Alyssa, Breeze Thai, Uncle Nicks Greek.

was at Eatery last night and both the mac and cheese and the asian chicken salad were very good.

I'm not a fan of Esca. And just to note that Uncle Nick's, which I like, is not a "little place."

"Little place" is really more of an attitude and/or position on the food heirarchy than a matter of square footage. Dim sum is often served in palatial rooms, but they can still be little places.

      2. West Bank Cafe, on 42nd, b/t 9th & 10th, serves delicious New American cuisine. Service is friendly and efficient. The space has pleasing decor and very comfortable seating.

Marseille, on the corner of 9th & 44th, serves excellent French/Mediterranean cuisine in a very attractive, bustling brasserie setting.

Seconding both West Bank and Marseille with the slight edge to West Bank Cafe.

Both are popular pre-theatre destinations, so I would make reservations if you plan to eat before curtain.

          2. Depending on what you order, Rachel's on 9th btwn 43-44th is good. I like the burgers and mac and cheese.

Our one and only time at Rachel's, I found the food only so-so and the seating extremely uncomfortable.

              1. I am going to check out Eatery tomorrow night after a show. I'll let you know what I think!
