We are traveling from Arizona to Alberta in July. I am passionate about fresh local produce and I'm wondering what we will find around Banff. I can't wait! Thanks!

Look for HOCHKISS FARMS anything! Their hierlooom tomatoes are AMAZING as are their string beans right now... I haven't tried the baby greens that BLUSH LANE ORGANICS is selling of theirs at the farmers market yet.... but they look incredible.

My favorite carrots are from LUND'S. They have a few different sizes to pick from....we go through 2 bags of the medium ones a week. They are soooo sweet and delish.

Thanks! Are the tomatoes, beans, and carrots still available in July? If not, any other summer recommendations? I love eating local produce! We are fairly deprived here in the southwest desert!

Note that "local" in southern Alberta is fairly broadly defined- there is a cornucopia of stone fruit over the mountains in BC for example, and these (cherries, peaches, plums, pluots, apricots) are sold all over the place around Calgary and area in the summer.

Hotchkiss tomatoes are hothouse grown and I think they're available much of the year (correct me if I'm wrong, somebody)- otherwise field tomatoes are only available in late summer like in most of the country.

We're probably as deprived as you are, incidentally. Very short growing season.

I know thw poster will be here in July...so this does not really help her....but everyone else here now should get some of the GREAT ASPARAGUS being harvested right now. The Innisfill (SP?) growers stand at the farmers market has lots....YUM!

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Susan I know of where you speak- was got two big bunches (the ones at that stand, Innisfail actually, have them ALREADY TRIMMED, a godsend, you don't have to pay for the 25%-ish that you end up breaking off and tossing out. Best we've had in years- one bunch steamed and eaten with a little fleur de sel, reggiano and mayo- try it- and the second bunch went in pasta with pesto and smoked turkey.

Hi Susanbnyc and John Manzo,
I am just starting this eating more locally and seasonally. I have found the great asaragus and other things at the farmers market. Although finding out the location of some produce is still hard as they just say "Alberta" or "BC" which does not really tell you where in each province the produce comes from. Any suggestions of other great places I can find produce and fish at?

Hi cmon et all,

The Alberta grocery chain of Sunterra does a good job of providing interesting local products. I'd try there. They have stores in Edmonton and Calgary.(www.sunterramarket.com) Also, don't the Co-op stores in Calgary and Red Deer (I think?) carry lots of local products from the region?

I thought I'd also alert you to the newly launched Chomp Around Alberta Web site, www.chomparoundalberta.com. It's a collaborative site where you can find all sorts of local food info. The Alberta Market Gardener's Association, the Farmers' Market association, Dine Alberta, Alberta Fruit Growers Association, Alberta Ag and Food and Travel Alberta have come together to make an all-inclusive site for foodies looking for a regional culinary experience in Alberta. I will, in full disclosure, let you know that I worked on it and contributed some info, but it's a cool site none the less:)
