American Canyon Malaysian - China Chef
I know very little about Malaysian or Singaporean, and only marginally more about Thai food, but China Chef in American Canyon has just opened up, with Malaysian seeming to be the main focus judging from the menu.
The chicken rendang ($8.25) I sampled today was pretty tasty and spicy. The lunch special comes with a soup of the day, steamed rice, and seasonal fruits.
Most offerings on their fairly vast menu are pretty unfamiliar to me - randomly pulled selections include:
Strawberry/Coffee Ribs (marinated spareribs/short ribs with either strawberry sauce or coffee flavor)
Nyonya Acah (pickle vegetables Nyonya style-fusion of Malay/Chinese flavors)
Chow Kueh Teow (Malaysian stir fried noodles with shrimp, bean sprouts, and egg in soy sauce)
Belachan Kangkung (stir fried kangkung in Malaysian spicy shrimp paste sauce)
Pulut Hitam with Red Bean (warm red bean and black sweet rice served in coconut milk)
Hot Pot Seafood Noodles (thick sauce noodle with seafood and vegetables in clay pot)
Stuff that I have heard of before that is listed on the menu includes the previously mentioned rendang, variations of Hainanese chicken, gado-gado, and the smattering of Thai dishes (Pad Thai, Satay, Papaya Salad, etc.)
The steam table of Americanized Chinese offerings in their takeout area frankly looked unappealing; seems the well-established Peking Express just across the street is the better option if someone was jonesing for that. With that observation, it'll be interesting to see whether AmCan will support this place, as entrees are a little higher up in price, ranging between $8 and $15.
If anyone with more knowledge of these cuisines happens to be in the area and willing to give it a try, I'd love to hear what you think.
