In search of new Shawarma spot - Willing to drive.

I've had a serious shawarma craving lately.

Usually when I get the bug I just head over to Carnival in Sherman Oaks, or Sunin off of Westwood Blvd.

I'm looking to expand my horizons and I'm also willing to drive.
I figure that someone out there might be able to suggest where I might find the best LA has to offer.

  1. Zankou. Arax.

    1. Sham in Santa Monica is good. It's on S.M. blvd at 7th. Their shwarma is quite good, and the portions are generous. I also really like their fresh, warm bread and hummus. Chicken Shwarma is also a winner.

Second Sham, which I thought was just a hair better than Sunnin, my other "go to" place for shawarma. Do they bake their own pita? It's quite tasty...

      2. Moishe's at the Farmer's Market on 3rd & Fairfax.

Thanks for the tip. I ended up at the Grove this weekend and remembered your suggestion. I got the Shawarma plate with a side of hummus and eggplant salad. Easily on par with anywhere else I've tried in LA - and better than many places I've eaten. My only complaint was that the price was a little high, but what else can you expect given the location? The meat was tender and well seasoned, and the plate came with two warm, substantial pitas. Worth giving a shot - but probably not going to be an all-the-time thing for me.

        2. My brother swears by...

          14500 Ventura Blvd

          1. Sham is okay, but I wasn't impressed that I had to order any sides separately, rather than getting a side of hummus or something with my entree.

Zankou's good and no-nonsense. In fact, I'm going to have a shawarma sandwich today for lunch--beef, tahini, tomatoes--what could be better?

            1. Haven't tried it myself but Open Sesame on 2nd Street in Long Beach get raves and is always packed.

Open Sesame is quite good...love the spicy garlic goo and pickled okra thingies. I always get it to go as the place is packed but if you are driving down from LA you might have to wait a bit but it should be worth it.

Oh man I haven't been to Open Sesame in ages ...

              2. Shawarma= ARAX (Normandie & Santa Monica Bl)

                Awesome Hummus

                1. My faves for beef shawarma include:
Shafaa on Hawthorne Bl. in Hawthorne,
Shawarma Kitchen in the GCM downtown,
Zankou (if you are near one).
I don't think any of these use lamb in the mix, but I could be wrong.

I can't remember which, but at least one of the stalls at St.Vincent Place downtown serves shawarma.

I've been trying to identify the addicting spice flavor used, and I believe that it is allspice.

Although the pita kitchen is great (and the owner is a good friend of mine) I have to recommend that you go to CARNIVAL in Sherman Oaks... Ohhhh if you like Shawarma you will love their Lebanese menu and the most hospitable service!!! The place is packed from morning to night.... They are consistently rated 5 stars by the critics
