Refreezing Crab Meat?

boogiebaby May 8, 2007 09:48 AM

We had king crab legs for dinner and had a couple leftover so I took out the meat and put it into a ziploc to make crab salad today. My hubby, in an effort to help clean up, put the bag in the freezer and I didn't find out until this morning. These were previously frozen legs that we heated up on the grill. Is refrozen crab ok to use? I would use the meat for crab cakes or something now instead of salad, but I'm hoping I don't have to toss all this meat! I did a search online but it seems divided.

Well, it's not going to hurt you, it just may not taste as good.

As long as it was heated thru again then refrozen it should be fine.
And yes I would cook it again when you thaw it out.
Crab Spring Rolls, Tossed in Alfredo on pasta. Something like that

It'll be ok. Flavor may not be quite as good (as Den mentioned), and the overall texture may be a bit "softer", but I wouldn't think that it would be hugely noticeable. More than likely it had already been thawed and re-frozen several times before it even hit your local store - the only difference is that it most likely would not have been heated previously (apart from the initial cooking).

Totally agree. Of course my bottom line question is how did she end up with leftovers?!?

My dad was supposed to come over for dinner but ended up cancelling at the last minute so we had his share left over. Believe me, we normally devour all the crab legs! Thanks for the advice everyone.
