Just saw this on craigslist: http://www.craigslist.org/eby/ret/99735339.html

Apparently there's a new taqueria called "La Calaca Loca" at Temescal & 51st. I bike past there every day and have never noticed it... Anyone been there? Any info to report?

It's near the check cashing business.
Allison from Bakesale Betty's told us about it. We stopped in for a "light" lunch. Had their aqua fresca (cantaloupe)- a little chunky but tasty and a fish taco which had an interesting sauce on in it. The fish was vrey fresh. I had mine fried, although grilled was an option.
My husband had a quesadilla with carnitas. It was huge. Also had the corn with mayo and cheese. Never having had this I found it "interesting".
The guy who owns and runs the place was very nice, if a little intense. I think it was just the new owner syndrome. We'll certainly go back and try other things. Allison says their tortilla soup is great.

same folks as Nick's Crispy Tacos in San Francisco. . . plus another partner. I went the first week it opened and came away with an "eh". Soup was not hot and the meat in my taco was dry (carnitas). I will wait a while and go back. Good concept but just not there yet. Not really a good taqueria in that neighborhood (if you count out Cactus on College, which I do- ick!) and if they can get their quality up it could do well. Just kind of inconsistent. As one of my prep cooks said, "It's taqueria food like they make in San Francisco, not here in Oakland" and I think she has a point.

I keep going back (3 times now) for their battered fish taco--fresh fish, yummy sauce, nice guacamole, very very good!
And the tortilla soup is just as good or better than at Dona Tomas--at half the price!

Hormone free meats, very pleasant service.

I haven't tried anything else yet.
