By San Francisco standards, it's a scorcher: 87 degrees and still climbing. Since air-conditioning is almost non-existent in San Francisco homes, our kitchens can easily get into the 80's and stay that warm for several days.

Among pantry items, which ones should go into the fridge when it gets this hot? Oils, perhaps? What about chocolate -- is it worse for it to bloom in the fridge or to melt and re-harden in the cupboard? What else do you look out for when it's too hot in the kitchen?

Yup, it's 91º in Pasadena right now, and I've got the AC running upstairs. The downstairs stays pretty cool if it's closed up, but I did put the eggs (which usually stay out in a cool corner) into the fridge, and I'd better put the bread in there tonight or it'll get moldy in a day or two. If I had butter out I'd refrigerate it as well. Oils can take care of themselves except at really high temperatures, but as the kitchen has never gotten over 85º as long as we've been here I don't worry about it. The onions live in a wire basket in a shaded and well-ventilated spot, so they'll be okay too.

My butter moves from the counter to the fridge when it gets too hot. Other than that, bread if we're not going to finish it this week.
