the creamiest soft serve

  • b

After having a decadent chocolate pudding cone at Herrell's in Alston the other day, and listening to the amazing forecast for the next few days, I have a hankering for ice cream. The spots for premium ice cream in the area are pretty well known, but I find that I'm usually disappointed in the local soft serve. Does anyone know places that make homemade soft serve? I'm not talking about low-fat, overly sweet stuff. I'm looking for something rich and creamy, and highly flavored. Real chocolate, vanilla or berry would be my top choices.

  1. bear,
Don't smack me, but I've eaten really creamy and smooth soft serve from...

    ...the food counter at Costco.

    *ducking*

    Andrea,
    in the way out west.

Hey, I'm not proud. The only problem is that I don't have a membership!

You can often sneak past the people standing there, since the food stand is near the exit (at least, in the Waltham store). The checkers are paying attention to the people leaving, not the people sneaking by them.

That being said, Chilly Cow in Arlington center has some pretty good softserve... almost custardy, but not too heavy.

Has anyone had the fro-yo from Ankara Cafe in Kenmore Square? They have a million different mix-ins... Reminds me of the list from the Candy Castle in Lexington.

I believe you only have to tell the people checking receipts at the exit that you are going in to the food counter and they will let you in, no membership required.

      2. Richardson's in Middleton has EXCELLENT soft serve, can't vouche for the chocolate because I am love their vanilla and don't go often enough to get the chocolate!! (not to mention by passing all the great hard flavors!)

        1. Celebrity Pizza & Dairy Bar, 684 Mt. Auburn St., Coolidge Square, Watertown, 617-924-0009.

          1. Louie's on Broadway in East Somerville has soft serve ice cream that is thicker and more creamy than most places around the area. Also, the grapenut ice cream there, while not soft serve, is well worth getting.

Do you know if Louie's is open at lunch time during the week? Do they serve food too?

No food there....I'm not sure whether they are open around lunchtime during the week. Does anyone else know? I'm not usually in the area during that time of day, otherwise I'd check (I don't even know if they have a phone, BTW!).

            2. I stopped at Kelly's Kreme on Revere Beach this weekend and thought the soft serve was pretty good. I usually don't order soft serve, but it seemed like everyone getting ice cream there was getting soft serve.
