Hi,
In case you are a beer drinker, there are a lot of choices in Ukraine. My favorite was an unfiltered called "Bila" (means white; pronounced beela) and the dark version "Bila Nich" (means white night). I recently tried a beer in the US called "Blue Moon" that reminds me of Bila.

If you see a strange oval tank thing with "KBAC" written on it, definitely get a cup. Kvass is an awesome fermented bread beverage. We saw them occasionally in Kiev--I think the tanks were white there; they seemed to be more popular in smaller towns.

We ate primarily from food stalls and one tiny bar we liked (one of those 500ml vodka with a plate of salo places) and I would tell you where it was but I lost the file that listed restaurants. Food stalls we visited were clustered primarily around the train station and adjacent market.
