Birthday party rec - steak & seafood & dessert

We're interested in a nice dinner for 4-8 people with incredible steak & seafood. Lobster would be a plus, but not a must-have.

Also -- where to have the best creme brulee?

  1. Keens, which has been in its 36th St. location since 1885, is our favorite steakhouse. In addition to delicious food, there's the incomparable old NY ambiance -- walls filled with memorabilia and rows of old clay smoking pipes suspended from all the ceilings. As is the case with most steakhouses, they do serve lobster. And, while the dessert menu includes creme brulee, I have no idea how good it is because we always end our meals there with the Coffee Cantata.

Keens is great, but I live around the block from there, so would love to try somewhere different! Any other suggestions??

Dylan Prime in Tribeca on Laight and Greenwich. I havent had much of anything else there, but they do have lobster and the desserts were good.

Do not go to Dylan Prime. The steaks are less than quality regardless of how the deserts taste.

Really? Can you elaborate? Which cuts have you had? I usually stick to the NY Strip. I've been there numerous times and have yet to have a less than quality steak.

Thanks for the Dylan Prime recommendation -- but unfortunately I wasn't able to make a reservation with them.

            Other suggestions?

This thread seems to be focusing on steakhouses, which at first thought, makes sense, considering what you are looking for. However, how about a French brasserie? Balthazar comes immediately to mind. The menu includes what you are looking for, i.e., steaks, seafood (including lobster), and creme brulee. I've somehow not managed to eat there yet, so I can't tell you from personal experience how good the food is.

balthazar? steak and fish? no. keens was a great call but the op shot it down. palm has good steaks and good lobsters. palm 1 or 2? your call.

Yes, steve h, you and I definitely agree about Keens. ;)

As I said, I haven't been to Balthazar, so it was left up to Hounds like you to comment on the food's quality.

Going back to steakhouses... We've had good steaks at Smith & Wollensky, albeit quite a long time ago. Lobster's on the menu, but I haven't a clue about creme brulee, and the menu on the website doesn't list desserts.

S&W has the best steak in the city IMO. The bone in cajun rib eye is outstanding. Their deserts are also amazing. This would be my choice but I cannot say I ever had the lobster. The S&W grill is more relaxed.
