I am not a real nut for Granola, but I am on a Granola with Yogurt kick recently. So where can I get both the tastiest Granola and where can I get some yoghurt with a deep taste to it -- French style or not?

So far, Arizmendi's offers the tastiest Granola I've had in SF. Grocers don't seem to match up. I am open to Muesli as well. Suggestions?

I agree. The greek is the best. For me, the Total brand wins. You can also find it at Mollie Stones if TJ's is out.
If you are watching calorie intake, the 2% and even the 0% fat are very tasty too.

I've been buying the Fage brand of Greek yogurt for the past year and like it a lot. It's pretty expensive, though. How much are the Trader Joe's Greek yogs? If they're a lot less, I may have to rethink my "I REFUSE TO SPEND 20 MINUTES DRIVING AROUND THAT DAMNED PARKING LOT TRYING TO FIND A SPOT!!" resolution.

Can't beat Strauss yogurt. Believe it or not, Whole Foods, aka Whole Paycheck sells it for $3.29. Galaxy Granola is excellent, but let's face it, they are getting too greedy at $7.50 for a pound at Ferry Plaza and Marin Civic Center Market and $7.99 in grocery stores. The Cheeseboard in Berkeley makes a tasty granola with superb toasted almonds. I sampled and bought Bear naked at Whole Foods last week. On special for $3.99 for 12 oz. Reg. price is $4.99. Lo and behold Mill Valley Market was charging $5.99 this week. The Apple Cinnmon seemed like it was pretty tasty. All of these are great with whatever fresh fruit is in season. Soon, we might be limited to banannas only! Anyway, great inquiry as this is The Best breakfast with a nice Illy cafe latte preceeded by fresh squeezed OJ!

ditto that. They have a large selection of granolas, many of them available in bulk so you can buy as much as you like. I'm fond of the pumpkin spice one. They carry Fage (that same Greek sold at TJ), St Benoit, and many other yogurts.

I prefer cereal to granola. For my money, the best is Trader Joe's Vanilla Almond Crunch. It is a granola/ flake cereal that Has big chunks of granola and flakes! The best of both worlds. I like to put it in my yogurt with fresh fruit for breakfast, but I also like it for desert.

St Benoit is an equisite French-style yogurt that is made from Jersey Cow milk. It is a local Sonoma company that makes small batches and has an admirable philosphy if you are in to that. However, it is the taste that is the standout. While it is extremlely pricy, one third of the price is the for the small pottery crock container. The price of the container is refunded if you return it. It puts it in the price range, in that case, of Fage Total yogurt.

The link below is to the website and has a locator on where it is sold.

Strauss yogurt is pretty similar without the hassle of returning the container. Trader Joes sells it and I have to imagine it is sold at Ferry Plaza, but not sure. Sketch Ice Cream makes a sorbet from it.

In addition to the Trader Joe's Greek Yogurt, TJ's has mediterrean cheese style yogurt which doesn't taste different than the Greek yogurt, IMO.

I'm trying to find a Mid-Eastern market in the Oakland/Berkeley area that might sell house-made yogurt. Crossroads markets in Hayward and Mountain View have big bowls of Greek yogurt that they sell accoding to how much you would like. It tastes better to me than Fage and the price is much, much better. However, they are too far away for me to get to often.

Berkeley Bowl has St. Benoit btw, for those of you in East Bay. I have had the plum and the plain and prefer the plain with some good honey. This actually tastes most like homemade yogurt to me. At $3 a pint, it's not for everyone though.

Strauss is another favorite of mine, runnier and a bit creamier than St. Benoit. You can get a big tub of this at Trader Joe's for pretty cheap. I think i would most likely choose this for granola.

TJ's has a house brand French style yogurt. I haven't had it in a while so forget how it tastes.

A pint of TJ's brand Greek yogurt is about $1.25 whereas the pint of Fage is $2. The Fage version is denser and creamier once you stir it. I have also tried the fig version of the Trader Joe's greek yogurt and didn't care for it. Odd texture, and not as much of that fig flavor that I wanted. Better just to use preserves. Actually, I can't remember a time when I really liked the fruit in a fruit yogurt.

There are some pretty good soy yogurts out there as well. I think Stonyfield (?) makes a relatively decent one but it's not spectacular. Soy yogurt to taste similar to commercial nonfat (milk based) yogurts. I'd love to find a really creamy soy yogurt. Anyone?

Slightly off topic, Berkeley Bowl also carries CA sage honey, which can be hard to find in my hood. The brand I buy comes in little pint mason jars with a paper label. Extremely viscous, light in color, and mild in flavor, not overly sweet, it made a nice chewy gingerbread and (I thought) went well with a firmer yogurt.

If you are ever on Solano in Berkeley and in a yogurt buying mood, Zand sells Salud yogurt which is extremely thick and really inexpensive - something like little over two bucks for a quart. It has more of a regular yogurt tang rather than the sour cream taste of Greek yogurt. Can't tell you too much about it as all the writing is in Farsi.

They also sell a home made French style yogurt with scallions that is incredible and incredibly expensive ($5 a pint). Doesn't go with granola though. This just comes in a clear white deli container with a sticker with one word on it ... in farsi.
