5:00 pm Midtown. Quiet Beer and Burger.

Is this a hopeless quest?

      yummy, but not quiet

You may be right, NAtive...burgers, beer and quiet don't usually go in the same sentence. :(

    2. Burger Joint? Not sure if that would be quiet enough...

      1. I like the burgers at Pigalle, 48th and 8th. At 5:00pm, you may even be able to sit there by the window and read the paper. Beers on tap are good, imported.

        1. GoodBurger: 43rd and 2nd or 54th and Lex. My mother (75 yo and hates hassle and noise) loves these places.

Or go a little further to Old Town Bar. Loud after 6 PM, but quiet before 6 PM. The onion rings are the best (breaded, not batter) rings in the city

mchales: you'll have to doublecheck on the address. but i'm going with mid to high 40s on 8th ave. incredible big juicy burgers, relaxed darksih bar atmosphere, lots of beers on tap.

ummm, McHales has been closed for like 3 years.

oh sad! thanks for the correction. i used to go when i worked in midtown, but that was about 2 years ago. didnt think it was the sort of spot to disappear, it seemed like it had been around so long...

just make the trip over to shake shack then, the weathers good, get your delicious burgers and beer and sit outside!

I can't remember exactly but either the building was torn down or being renovated for condos and they lost their lease.

I think the best burger in midtown is at Michael Jordan's in Grand Central but it is far from quiet although not terrible if you get the seat on the inside of the bar, i.e., not the ones with your back to the main concourse.

Shake Shack is a great idea and at 5, there shouldn't be much of a line and they do have a pretty good beer selection. Besides that, I'd recommend goodburger or Rare (even though I think Rare isn't great just good and maybe slightly overpriced, but it fits your bill).
