We need help! Coming to NY for a few days and are looking for a really, really good Italian meal. Can't deal with the phone lines at Babbo. I've heard great things about Crispo and Piccolo Angolo, but the posts on the boards suggest that noise can be ear-splitting at both. How bad is it? How good is the food? And, most important, are these the best choices?

  1. You might want to consder Del Posto, one of Batali's other outlets in the city. It is not as chaotic as Babbo and the food is great. They have an enoteca also that is a bit more casual than the regular dining room.

      Or Lupa...

    2. Po is great too. On Cornelia street-- a quiet and cute block. The restaurant is somewhat tight (tables close together) but the food makes up for it and it's not that loud.

      1. I wouldnt say ear splitting at Crispo but it can certainly get loud. Never to the point that I've had trouble conversing with the people I'm with though. I virtually always sit in the back patio. If they've removed the roof out there, it's probably your quietest bet.

        1. I'd go with Crispo over Piccolo Angolo. Piccolo Angolo is a solid red sauce place, but it's sort of ordinary. Crispo can be very good. I don't think the noise level at Crispo is ear splitting. Also, tables are somewhat more well spaced than at PA, and Crispo takes reservations.

          1. I haven't been to Crispo but the noise level at Piccolo can be high on week ends.
Best to go during the week. The restaurant is tiny but the food is real "down home Italian" and a NY experience. A real fun place.
