Breakfast/bakery near Union Square

Have you tried the Grand Cafe? I was there a few weeks ago and had a wonderful omelet. http://www.grandcafe-sf.com

I don't recall the bread... either I didn't have or it wasn't memorable.

Not sure about union square, but Delissio, on Market near Valencia (a short streetcar ride) has awesome pastries. Or you can head east, to the Ferry Building, where there are also luscious baked goods to be had, some very French indeed.

Cafe Madeleine on O'Farrell between Stockton & Kearny?
Good desserts. Can't vouch on breakfast stuff and not sure when they open in the morning.

Cafe Madeleine's pastries are OK, not great. I think Emporio Rulli (right in the square) is a little better, but overpriced. Segafreddi (by Powell St cable car and inside the old Westfield food court) sells some Bay Bread pastries. If you have time, though, it's worth trekking to the Ferry Building.
