Revisiting Pesce Blue

Ate recently at Portsmouth's Pesce Blue. New owners. They have about 30 wines by the glass and starting to get into small plates so it's more affordable. Really, really good food. I'd recommend it to anyone.

My wife and I had dinner here on Sunday night for our 1st anniversary, and I was a bit underwhelmed by the food. The small plates seemed to be the way to go here - a long list and each item is around $3 - 6. And on Sun. night, at the bar, small plates are only $1 or 2 (don't know if they are the same size or not at the bar). The grilled shrimp were delicious, but the roasted (then chilled?) tomatoes were very bland even with some reduced balsamic drizzled over the top.

I ordered the chef's tasting menu which seemed to be a deal compared to ala carte at only $34 for 4 courses or $20 for two. I was mostly unimpressed with all but one out of the four courses. First course was a baby green salad mixed with a bland, nondescript creamy dressing and smoked trout on top of a bed of sliced cucumbers. The trout was the best part, but there was something sweet (cucumbers or red onions were marinated?) that just conflicted with the creamy dressing. Second course was the most edible - orichettes with caramalized onions and mushrooms with fennel pork sausage was quite rich but seemed so out of contrast with the other courses. Third course was pan seared haddock over mashed potatoes with ramps. Nice presentation, but everything was really bland especially the mashed potatoes - fish didn't seem all that fresh either - I've had frozen fish cakes that had more flavor than this dish. Desert was somewhat fresh berries with their own granola topped with marscapone - a little boring for me, but I knew my wife would love it, and she did. My wife ordered a salad and the shrimp risotto which she said she enjoyed, but complained about the crunchy risotto. I enjoy my risotto "toothsome" and thought this was more crunchy than it should have been. If it wasn't for the amount of food I got with the tasting menu, my wife would have left hungry. Bill came to about $90 before tip with a glass of wine and a couple of sprites - the place was nearly empty for the two hours we were there and service was leisurely which is what we wanted. Good thing we had a GC, because I would not want drop that much cash for such mediocrity.

Do they always have the Sun. special on small plates? Will be there this Sun. Is it certain times?
