A dinner anywhere for my husband and me is what we are being given as a return for a big favor. So now what? What would your three top choices be in New Jersey for a special dinner/ Please don't include Rats or David Drakes. Thanks for the help!

I'll stick with three that very local to me, although there are already several very good selections listed...

          Saddle River Inn

          St. Eve

          Cafe Panche

              I would go with:

              Casa Guiseppe - Edison
              Tre Pianio - Princeton
              Il Villagio - Parsippany

Here are my top three -- one for each part of the state. :)

                  Tre Piani
                  120 Rockingham Row
                  Princeton, NJ
                  http://www.trepiani.com/
Don't let the shopping area setting fool you - this is a serious foodie place. Also marvelous wine list and attentive service, but a bit on the noisy side.

                  The Frog and The Peach
                  29 Dennis Street
                  New Brunswick
                  New Jersey 08901
                  http://www.frogandpeach.com/
                  Famous and justly so.

                  Il Capriccio
                  633 Rt. 10 East
                  Whippany, NJ 07981
                  http://www.ilcapriccio.com/
                  Elegant setting, outrageous food.

Il Capriccio, I forgot about that place...amazing food. I went once and never made it back.

I agree with The Frog and the Peach also. A little less formal, more hip, but still great food and keen wine list is Marco and Pepe in Jersey City.

I agree I have always had great meals at all three of those restaurants. I guess longevity is the key to consistency.
