Meatballs - Arguably the best in LA...

woojink May 2, 2007 08:36 AM

Let the discussion and debate begin!

Last night, a group of friends and I had a really great meal at Pastina on Westwood Ave near Olympic (btwn Olympic & Pico). Great meal. Great service. Not pretentious at all.

We had burratta w/proscuitto, grilled shrimp w/tomato & cream sauce, tagliatelle w/mushrooms and tomatoes, beef tenderloin, rack of lamb, and a few other dishes as well as a huge dessert platter.

But wait, I forgot... as one of the sides to the pasta course... meatballs! Holy Cow. Tasted like 100% ground veal. Hand made, tender, soft, delicious, melt in your mouth, amazing good. Really. That. Good.

One note - They do not have meatballs everyday.

Now, I have not had meatballs at every place in LA, and maybe I need to do the meatball challenge, but I've got to tell you, I've been known to throw down at a bunch of places in the LA/OC food kingdom, and these were AMAZING.

Sounds interesting, but maybe more importantly, did you have the cheesecake for dessert?

Wayne - good to hear from you! Hope you're doing well.

In fact, one of the items on the dessert platter was the cheesecake, and it was really good.

iirc, all the entrees are under $20.

I have had those meatballs, and yes, they were good.

Actually, I asked which non-seafood pastas the manager fellow who was waiting on us thought they were doing best, and he asked if I liked spaghetti and meatballs. Well, heck yes I do, and they were very good. This was my first visit to Pastina, and we liked it overall a lot.

How, though, were the other meat dishes you had at the table? That would be good to know.

The lamb and filet were terrific. I forgot to also add that we had the veal chop. Really Good.

The meatballs at Spago are awesome! I got them for lunch once and I highly recommend them. Great meal to split with someone since it comes with 2 huge ones and they are very filling. Although I would also recommend getting an appetizer and dessert:)

Yum! I love Italian, but my fiance has eyes only for meatballs so this will be the perfect place to lure him to.

Menupages has their pastas at $10-15. Is it really that low?

We kind of ordered food as a group last night so our pricing was way off. But I seem to recall that the place is fairly reasonably priced.

Meatballs (with spaghetti) at Dominick's are excellent. On Beverly Blvd near Jerry's Deli and the Beverly Center/Cedars Sinai.

The cheese ravioli there is almost gnocchi like and is delicious too.
